Also, while I'm moaning about linux aspiring to the desktop, there's a bunch of stuff about app packaging in the contemporary linux space that makes me feel tired and I'm sure I'd have had a strong opinion about Right Choices, like 15 years ago, when I was an asshole about that kind of thing. Mostly, now, I care about app packaging in the sense that it proliferates the sources, and corresponding management infrastuctures, that I have to deal with the UI of, and packaged apps seem to worsen my UX by making my machine slower.
It's absurd to evangelise "yeah let's stuff every app in a container designed for headless server isolation and it just doesn't matter if the desktop turns to laggy shit" because it objectively matters if you turn everything to laggy shit! "Machine feels slow" was, like, one of the earliest HCI measures put under scientific study???
