No, seriously. A lot of decisions that go into Linux distros tend to be made by developers and technically minded supporters of [ insert distro here ], so, in all its fashion, if a developer finds some esoteric format to be superior, they'll use it, compatibility be damned. There's few distros that are truly consumer focused, and the few that are tend to, in my experience, get seen as "less serious" — See Ubuntu, and its previous attempts at pushing Linux mainstream, — or are so far detached from its roots you don't even know its Linux by looks alone (Android).

You see this with a lot of FOSS on Windows & Mac too. A lot of software with horrible user experiences, weird and sometimes proprietary formats (no Qemu I don't want a cow just mount the damned VHD), jank user interfaces, etc. — And they are that way on purpose. A developer decided that those were the "best" ways to go about things, usability be damned.

There's practically no good streaming software on macOS because of this. Apple doesn't make any, and everything is either just a glorified Chrome browser, or is thanklessly ported and maintained by 3 dudes using donated hardware who have had half their ideas for QoL shot down by a senior project maintainer who thinks they're "unnecessary" or just don't like them.

I'm not saying you should get a Mac, to clarify. FOSS, & Linux as a whole, should be better.

If Apple can make macOS 10+, and Google Android, then a user-oriented, well designed POSIX system is not impossible. The right group, with the right focus could get the job done. Hell, Canonical almost did with Ubuntu, before giving up and going back on a lot of its design.

It's just… the nerds with too much free time on their hands are the ones commonly making these things, and they're making the distros They Want™︎ , hence why there's so many of them.
