Despite sometimes embarassing lyrics Medusa works for me every time. The combination of the moody, ethereal 4AD sound with a generous dose of synths and a distinct dancefloor focus is just chef's kiss. It's a defining darkwave album, but for some reason doesn't sound like any of the other darkwave I've tried? And even their first album, despite ostensibly being similar, just doesn't work for me. I struggle to understand it. Where is the other music like this

Yeah, that 80s 4AD sound is so distinctive. Some of Dead Can Dance's stuff from that period is vaguely similar. Ditto with Cocteau Twins. Those were both 80s 4AD projects too, I think? 10 Years later futurepop would borrow some of those sonic palates, but much more high-tempo. Part of me wants to say Malice Mizer, but they were way more Castlevania-soundtrack-melodrama. You could also go in a somewhat different direction and look at like, the European coldwave stuff from that period. Asylum Party, Siekiera, Grauzone, etc.

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of informative comment I was hoping someone would make šŸ™ I'm a big fan of 80s 4AD, but aside from Asylum Party haven't listened to the rest of these (and I've only very lightly dabbled in Asylum Party, I need to spend some more time with them). I'll start digging through them!

I haven't heard of Malice Mizer before but "Castlevania-soundtrack-melodrama" is definitely something I could see myself being into

yeah, 80s Dead Can Dance is pretty iconic "early 4AD sound", even if I prefer their 90s stuff that borrows more from classical and European folk. I love Asylum Party, Borderline is an all-time fav for me in terms of Darkwave/Post-Punk. Malice Mizer is definitely an acquired taste, but Bara no Seidō is probably their most darkwavey album.

I just listened to roughly half of Borderline while doing chores and damn, it’s real good. I love the pairing of the gothy, post-punky guitar and the prominent synths, I’m looking forward to the rest

I really need to dig into Dead Can Dance’s 90s output - I love them but so far haven’t listened past Aion. I keep meaning to sit down with Into the Labyrinth

On 4AD, have you listened to It’ll End in Tears by This Mortal Coil? It’s one of my all-time favorites and there’s a strong argument for it as the most 4AD album of all time.
