Absolutely one of my all-time favorite bands nowadays but years ago I had literally never heard Once in a Lifetime, only people making "THIS IS NOT MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE!!!" jokes. One day my wife showed me this and said "Look, this is the not my beautiful wife song" and the rest is history. Thank u to my wife and kermit u both changed my life

I still remember the first time watching Stop Making Sense and being completely surprised at what kind of band they were. I'd only ever heard Psycho Killer, and knew they were "artsy" but the sheer amount of funk and danceability and fun, also the significant presence of black musicians and black people in the crowd changed everything about how I saw them as a band, and Im so happy for it!

I love your story for getting into them, thats lovely :]

One of the things I really love about David Byrne is that he clearly has a lot of love for music from other cultures and is also really intentional + respectful about how he takes inspiration from them as a white guy. I think he is generally very interested in uplifting the source he's drawing from and bringing the right people into his creative process. It's so clear to me in Stop Making Sense and Speaking in Tongues because they went really hard on funk and so filled their backing band with black musicians, so many other bands would simply never have done that. I get the impression he's continued in this vein exploring World Music over his solo career!
