City pop loon
City pop loon is a form of Canadian and North American pop music that emerged in late 2018, and surged in popularity in the early 2020s. It was originally termed as an offshoot of America's "love honk", but came to include a large range of styles – including funk loon, disco loon, R&B loon, and boogie loon.
Musical origins
Inspired by the massive popularity of the America-focused love honk, city pop loon was pushed by the government of Ontario as a way to "give a Canadian flair to love honk"[1]. To accomplish this, the Ontario government partnered with the band ReverieSounds to create the first city pop loon album, simply titled "City Pop Loon". It was promoted in Toronto's "Loonies for City Pop Loon" event, which aimed to spread the popularity of city pop loon in Toronto and would hopefully have led to the more city pop loon albums being created by other artists.[2]
Reception
Critics lambasted "City Pop Loon" for being "city pop, but with a loon in it"[3], and being "creatively, morally, and musically bankrupt"[4]. Despite this, city pop loon remains relatively popular up north, and has migrated over the border to Minnesota, even reaching as far as Wisconsin.[5]
