
do you ever think about how incredible it is that libraries exist at all in american society, let alone to the degree we have them?
it feels like something that should never exist given how hugely hostile the country is to anything free or that cuts into profits.
it's like, one of the only public institutions i can think of that feels anything close to "benevolent"
the leftover relics of new deal & pre us involvement in ww2 when there was a bunch anti-aristocractic sentiment that led to expansion of social programs.
works progress administration built/renovated tons of libraries.
before then a lot of libraries were rich fucks trying to improve their reputation by that magical word “philanthropy”
then they learned it didn’t matter and if they say the right things people will just think they are the best.
