trying to find something unique to say about that one guy but every attempt boils down to "wow his career is super over"

occasionally having the thought "what if my reputation is crushed like a grape under a steel-toed boot?" and then soaking in relief when i remember that i am not a con man

I got that feeling so bad during the Ana Mardoll saga as I am also a trans man known for strident and occasionally overreaching social justice Takes combined with an certain tendency towards cutseyness

but then I remember that I work at a hospital

(and that I long ago stopped participating in Internet vendetta campaigns, which is, realistically, the much more relevant factor in everyone turning on Mardoll. there's lots of defense contractors on social media.)

I dunno, the Ana Mardoll thing seemed just mean-spirited, and I never got the feeling that Mardoll himself was mean-spirited.

Also, I would guess that few people in the mob that went after him have ever been in the position of having a disabled household and facing a choice between a job with a defense contractor and everyone losing healthcare. It's an unpleasant position to be in, speaking from experience.

okay, a little relitigating: I think the real thing that fueled the anger was that Mardoll had been involved in a lot of internet vendettas himself and was accused of leading harassment campaigns. I was not involved on either side of any of these, and I'm sure as hell not digging through multiple years of Twitter arguments to find out the Real Story, so I cannot confirm or disconfirm what actually happened or who was in the right, I'm just reporting that this is a thing I have heard mentioned

but I think that was the real deal and the Lockheed Martin reveal was sort of just the drop that burst the floodgates

(though once the flood had started there were a lot of people who joined in bad faith and just thought he was annoying, or the wrong kind of trans, or being trans at all was bad enough, or calling your partner "Kissmate" is some kind of unpardonable sin... not saying that this was only about righteous revenge, it was a mess)

A similar thing is starting with Somerton: “I never heard of this person before hbomberguy’s video and may I say, his fashion sense is atrocious and his boiled-egg head reminds me of Darth Vader unmasked”.

I get why hbomberguy made a four-hour video. Somerton had deflected plagiarism claims before, successfully. A viable way you can nail that kind of bad-faith actor is by laying out every piece of evidence, all at once, so he can’t plink away at individual incidents with minimization and obfuscation. And I get why hbomberguy made a rhetorically over-the-top video; first, that’s just his style, but second, it’s a way to get people to watch the whole damn thing. But the (very few) personal cheap shots he took were in response to people who had taken personal cheap shots at him, not at Somerton.

But there’s blood in the water and Somerton is now The Enemy and if there’s anything I’ve learned about online queer discourse it’s that if you’re The Enemy you’re an unperson and people feel they have license to attack you with any means at their disposal.
