New Project, Who Dis

it's me. it's cherry. it was free. you'll see why.

so this piece didn't give me a whole lot of choices. it's the thickest piece of cherry i have, and it's a crotch piece, so it had that going for it. these are photos of cutting the piece down to size, de-barking it and cutting it into a rough circle on the bandsaw.

my girlfriend picked it up for me from a local guy who's got a woodmizer and has a peculiar little setup at the end of his driveway where he sells boards.

down near a row of mailboxes there is a cartoony sort of igloo in the shape of a deep-sea submersible fabricated out of sheet metal and brightly painted, next to an enormous metal strawberry in the same style. they have doors and hatches. you can duck inside them and stand up. in the same display there are scattered lawn ornaments, sculptures, old televisions and curiosities artfully arranged over an area the size of a two bedroom house. it's like the fruiting body of a strange art-mushroom that's sprouted out from the woods onto the edge of the main road. there are also boards with species and prices written on them in chalk.

the whole display is completely unattended. there's a sign with a phone number and instructions: hide your payment anywhere in the display, call the number and leave a message saying where you hid the money, then collect the boards you bought. the outgoing message on the voicemail encourages you to leave your number in case the guy can't find the money. that's the "point of sale" system.

i've bought wood from this guy probably four times in this way. we've met once, and it was... strange. he is an extremely eccentric man. he's like an old bowerbird. i love him. he must be protected.

anyway, he was giving this board away for free. so my lady picked it up for me.

in reply to @allenwalton's post:

i wouldn't want to doxx him, but i'll try and see if he's comfortable with that next time we talk. he talked my ear off once about people messing around with his display. seems real particular about his privacy BUT ALSO has built a little art installation on the side of a public road, so i dunno. guy's sorta nuts. he's got some contradictory stuff going on. as coots so often do, ya know?
