I think it's pretty comfortable in the "Pretty good!" range, and people are (somewhat justifiably) hurting for films in the Genre Blockbuster space. There's a lot to like, there's a lot that didn't work all that well in my opinion, like the dialogue, but I was happy to see it and I had a good time.
That being said, I don't think it can the Star Wars of this generation because, aesthetic qualities aside, Star Wars is still the Star Wars of this generation.
Aesthetic qualities NOT aside, I don't Villeneuve's sterile vision of the far future can be as load-bearing to the film's popularity as the retro-analogue, worn-and-torn style that Star Wars or any foundational style of sci-fi possessed. Like, Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner, all have distinct visual styles that can almost exist outside of the films by now, but what does Dune look like that isn't just what all of Denis Villeneuve's science fiction work looks like? What's the unique aesthetic quality that people can evoke elsewhere? I guess I'm just not seeing it.
