Don't beat yourself up if a painting/crochet/model project isn't coming together. Give it away to a friend to finish, store it in a container and revisit it years later. Do what brings you joy.

This PSA brought to you by me selling off some model locomotive projects on eBay this week I won't ever get around to doing.

there is one very important thing you have to do to be able to do this!

  1. Document where you were and what you need to do to continue

That's it! Stuff it in a drawer somewhere along with the note (this is easier on a pc with files and folders) and continue later when you inevitably circle back to this hobby later on.
Don't have to leave a long note, just a single line or a few will do, ie:

  • What were you working on?
  • Why?
  • Where do you continue?

I've completed projects YEARS after starting them, through doing this. why focus on one hobby at a time when you can just cycle them?

I'm playing like 4 games at once, each a few weeks/months at a time, just leaving myself lil notes on what to do next. Works wonders, though it'll take some time to complete things. Bonus is that you never really burn out because you don't have to force yourself to complete it, just wait for the next time you hyperfixate on it!

in reply to @tit's post:

I feel like this idea has been rotating in the back of my mind for ages, but consciously seeing someone 1) actually implement it and 2) vouch for its effectiveness is motivating me to actually consciously develop this habit. Thanks!
