we created a hyperspecific key set for our colemak-dh 40% layout and its quirks, some that'll never be represented in normal sets. the number row is an obvious 40% modification, one that led us to keep the esc key on that same layer just to the left. a lot of choosing our layout is keeping our muscle memory working.... sometimes. the Vim arrows are similar, but colemak means that the letters that Vim actually uses aren't there, and these are shifted one to the right for comfort. the quad-legend keys are amusing, like something you'd find on a typewriter. aside from a couple alignment issues, this is very satisfying.

we've been typing like this for three years now and it feels pretty good! four rows, two layers, and we can type anything we need.

notes:

  • laser-etched keycap printing by fkcaps.com, which has a brilliant custom keycap set creation tool. the layout was created in Inkscape and uploaded to that tool. the legends are gray because they're lasered on. no idea what the durability is like with that.
  • typeface is Gorton Perfected, a digital version of a ubiquitous industrial engraver's type. (from the kickstarter for Marcin Wichary's Shift Happens)
