• They/Them

Trite, contrived, mediocre, milquetoast, amateurish, infantile, cliche-and-gonorrhea-ridden paean to conformism, eye-fucked me, affront to humanity, war crime, should literally be tried for war crimes, resolutely shit, lacking in imagination, uninformed reimagining of, limp-wristed, premature, ill-informed attempt at, talentless fuckfest, recidivistic shitpeddler, pedantic, listless, savagely boring, just one repulsive laugh after another.

suggestions welcome

1 point

  • proprietary, has no reason to be
  • defaults to dark theme
  • does not follow OS's UI theme1
  • uses custom notification system
  • "written in Rust" advertised as a feature2
  • "built with Nix" advertised as feature3
  • subscription pricing model
  • is a mobile application first released within the last five years

2 points

  • only has dark theme
  • has a light theme but it's really horrible
  • custom notification system that ignores OS's do-not-disturb setting
  • uses seperate, bespoke updater application
  • Apple product
  • Google product
  • contains advertisements for unrelated products or services

3 points

  • uses Chromium/Electron/Tauri
  • Microsoft product
  • has no mechanism for automatic updates4
  • installs updates without consent/confirmation
  • came with another unrelated piece of software

scoring some applications

  • Google Chrome: six points, reflects ability to fool users into thinking it's not dogshit
  • Discord: 15 points! accurately reflects how obviously dogshit it is
  • VS Code: nine points, accurately reflects that the software is kinda dogshit but not that bad
  • Steam: 19 points! unfortunately, it doesn't matter because it's basically completely unavoidable if you want to play games on a PC.
  • Firefox: two points, good job guys :3
  • LibreOffice: zero! goose egg! 🥳

  1. Qt applications exempt, as long as they still property use light/dark themes

  2. not to say that Rust itself is dogshit5, but you'd have to be in pretty dire straits to advertise the language used to build the application as a feature

  3. see 2, s/Rust/NixOS, s/language/operating system

  4. applications that don't really need to update exempt

  5. for now, at least. some of you may already know how I feel about Rust.

in reply to @MxSelfDestruct's post:

obsidian:
+1 proprietary
+1 defaults to dark (i think?)
+1 has a mobile app
+3 uses electron :(

overall 6 points, which is nice enough, since obsidian is absolutely amazing (also it doesn't lag? which is a first for an electron app, among those i've used).

would be nice to get some clarification on the mobile app point (like, does it have to be a mobile app, or is just having a mobile client qualifiable?) and the separate updater (like, how exactly? like a separate app like adobe cc or included in?)
