Magic is getting a crossover with Marvel which isn't surprising but they are getting multiple sets. As a good friend put it, Marvel/Disney aren't interested in simple representation, but they want to be the center of attention. This might be the point of no return.
I've had mixed feelings on Universes Beyond. On the one hand the design team clearly has put a lot of thought into the flavor and how mechanics tie into it. The fanbases for these crossovers have been excited about how on point the flavor is. I think the crossovers would have been a failure without this extra care put into it. However, it's also pretty clear the design team is given more liberty to push the boundaries design wise and we end up with far more interesting cards in the crossover products. It takes the wind out of the in universe stuff a bit when we know they have to hold back.
There's also the whole thing with Universes Beyond treating Modern as a dumping ground and I've complained about this a lot already but the short version is we're likely getting a direct to Modern set every year now. This is the point where I'm dropping the format. It's too expensive to keep up and even if the decks I play don't use the new cards their existence can easily obsolete what I'm playing. It's like we're playing Standard except it's five times more expensive.
This can't be sustainable, right? I keep seeing more and more sentiment about the product deluge and how people can't keep up but everything just keeps on chugging. They're doing new boosters to save limited from their own self inflicted wounds. Prices keep going up. Crossovers will bring in new players and Marvel is about as big as it gets, so what happens when that well runs dry? Corporate greed has to ruin everything.
I have bought very little sealed this year and sold about 90% of my collection barring a handful of decks and staples. I've just been coasting off of Card Kingdom store credit for anything I've needed but once that runs out I'm gonna just proxy cards if I'm still playing the game.
