Everything, by Voidtools (David Carpenter), directly parses the NTFS Master File Table, allowing it to index drives quickly and search them near-instantly. Search queries can be formulated with a wide variety of operators to find exactly the file needed.

Everything is much faster than Windows Search; it supports NTFS, FAT, network drives, and more; and it allows extensive customization of the UI and functionality, with plenty of power user features. Everything version 1.5, currently in alpha, will allow use and indexing of the Windows Property System for instant search of all file metadata known to the OS, along with many other improvements.

It is closed source, and is freeware. Download here.

this changed the way i use Windows when i discovered it some years back. essential, and superior to the busted search Windows ships with.

i recommend using its bookmarks feature to save frequent searches, and consulting Help -> Search Syntax when you're ready to bust out some fancier logic. one bookmarked search i use every day brings up a majority of the folders on my computer that contain downloaded music albums.
