like don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those "buuuh the commies are using tick tock to corrupt our precious white youth!" goons1 but holy shit what a terrible platform. explicitly designed to foster compulsive usage, robs creators blind, spreads bullshit like wildfire, is basically memetic rat poison for anyone with AD(H)D, and censors any discussion of any potentially controversial topic, like queer people existing or the word "kill".

Fuck TikTok. Fuck what it's done to the internet. Fuck every company trying to copy its model.

That fuckin sucks, I’m so sorry.

When i was young, cuz i was edgy and wanted to be “tough” and “manly”, I sought out the Faces of Death videos on liveleak and 4chan and rotten. That shit twisted my heart for many years, and now seeing things remotely similar is like an electrical shock, repulsed and horrified to have it now lurking in my mind forever.

Used to be and do the same thing, and I'm regularly reminding myself actively that it's not actually OK for me to be very desensitized to seeing this sort of thing. It's never great to see something awful, and the recoil takes 10 minutes, an hour, or days to make me realize exactly why what I just saw is awful. The feeling is muted, it's always a conscious thought.

With that in mind, I genuinely cannot muster any sympathy for platforms like Tiktok, because when they're not this, they're a dancing celebration of branding - up to and including literally having what they call regular Brand Takeovers as a standard advertising format. I'm not on Team Tiktok Corrupts The Youth either, but honestly, I'm rooting for its removal. Then again, I'm rooting for Twitter dying, too.
