were all the Intel Core i5 dekstop chips before gen 10 literally just i7s with hyperthreading disabled??????
i just fucking realized that up until the 10XYZ lineup, the only difference between the i5 and the i7 were that the former didn't have hyperthreading and was clocked like 100-200 MHz slower. guh???
as i understand this is common practice in chip manufacturing, not all of the chips coming out of the same production run are equal and the worse ones get some features disabled to fit a lower tier of product (which, to be clear, sucks)
ohhhh that kind of makes sense, I guess having some features disabled is better than just… throwing the chip away.
Component binning is also common for other components, too -- classically, a lot of resistors specified as 5% accuracy would actually be considerably better than that but not better than 1% accuracy because the 1% can be sold for a premium.
