my stance on the webp "discourse" is that 99% of the people mad about it would not give even a fraction of a shit about any of this if windows photo viewer/(your image viewer of choice) could open it.
you would not care that google is foisting it onto everyone all of a sudden. you would not care that it's another "open" standard de facto controlled by an unaccountable megacorporation, which could - and probably will - become closed at the drop of a hat one day. none of this would cross your mind at any point! you're ultimately upset because whoever maintains your image viewer/editor of choice is dragging their ass. get real, damnit.
