First shot of animation: Vertical pan down in the jungle to a young rabbit
The big draw here is the massive and fantastical infrastructure that keeps the city working, and an investigation plot keeps them moving from place to place to show it off. It’s a wonder this hasn’t been turned into a dark ride in one of the parks, it’s a perfect fit.
To be generous, the message of the film works when the axes of discrimination and their intersections stand on their own, illustrating a system rather than being a direct mirror of actual bigotries. But then they can’t stop from making those comparisons, like Judy calling Nick “a real articulate fella”, and I no longer want to be generous. X-Men stories have the same problem.
And you know the perfect hero for your sometimes-but-not-always-racism story? Cops. One who really ingratiates herself to the audience by pledging to double the parking ticket quota, which is a truly non-partisan perspective.
The school play prologue mentions astronauts. The sequel better be about the space program.
