First shot of animation: rain falls over a city orphanage in sepia times
Meet the Robinsons asks the question of its time: what if Chicken Little were good? Characters move with a floaty smoothness that reflects the aesthetic of the future, different scenes and moods have different lighting, the jokes are sharp and constant, and most of all the emotional core is finely observed. I don’t think anyone working on The Rescuers was raised in an orphanage but you can feel the personal experience here.
Some shots are so obviously framed for 3D projection and that’s going to be such an artifact of this narrow slice of film history.
