First shot of animation: Helicopter shots over San Fransokyo
The first, and so far only, case of WDAS dipping into IP from an acquisition. I guess Disney at large figures each vertical is more valuable with the image of separateness.
San Fransokyo is so dense and decorated and alive. It takes the cultural mix presented as a source of anxiety in Blade Runner, and makes it a fantastical urban ideal. The action scenes emphasize speed and kineticism, with extreme angles love action films wouldn’t attempt. Frozen at times fell in the uncanny valley of fabric effects, but here clothes move believably and the particle effects shine.
Fred exemplifies the idea that genre stories need a nerd to tell us what’s happening. As if he we couldn’t figure out this is “our origin story” or “this is a revenge story” if he didn’t say it out loud.
Why is the team building montage a Fall Out Boy music video? Retroactively, why did Wreck it Ralph have Owl City? Is this the legacy of hiring Elton John for The Lion King?
