One thing I've often considered, as a commissioner of digital artwork, is whether commissioning a piece of art grants the right to give that piece a title, either in the absence of a title given to it by the artist or even to replace one.
In the former case, in my experience, digital pieces delivered from an artist to a commissioner rarely have an explicit title. The artist doesn't state one at that point, and when they upload it to social media, it often lacks one there, as well. Uploads to actual galleries usually carry a title, but that can be done long after delivery to the commissioner, or not at all. The filename of a piece can give hints to the intended title, but they range across artists from random strings of characters, to the date it was completed, to one-word descriptors, all the way to clear titles.
Does it seem right, in any or all of these cases, that the commissioner should choose a title according to their vision of the piece?
Then, when a title is explicitly given by the artist, does it seem right that the commissioner also share it with a differing title?
I don't know the answer to these questions. Would love to gather thoughts on it!
