One thing I've often considered, as a commissioner of digital artwork, is whether commissioning a piece of art grants the right to give that piece a title, either in the absence of a title given to it by the artist or even to replace one.

In the former case, in my experience, digital pieces delivered from an artist to a commissioner rarely have an explicit title. The artist doesn't state one at that point, and when they upload it to social media, it often lacks one there, as well. Uploads to actual galleries usually carry a title, but that can be done long after delivery to the commissioner, or not at all. The filename of a piece can give hints to the intended title, but they range across artists from random strings of characters, to the date it was completed, to one-word descriptors, all the way to clear titles.

Does it seem right, in any or all of these cases, that the commissioner should choose a title according to their vision of the piece?

Then, when a title is explicitly given by the artist, does it seem right that the commissioner also share it with a differing title?

I don't know the answer to these questions. Would love to gather thoughts on it!

I def know as an artist who takes comms myself, I don't mind if the commissioner uploads it with a different title than the one I gave, and think I've seen plenty of other commissioners do the same with pieces they got from other artists.

I don't really spend much time trying to make titles, I usually just give it whatever comes to mind when I'm uploading it. The title to me doesn't matter cuz when I'm commissioned most of the work is put into making the actual piece that the commissioner will hopefully love, past that I don't really care what they put as a title and such if they themselves upload it

Tbh I could def see some artists having a specific title they want to give a piece and only have that title be tied to that piece and if that's the case I think that request should be respected as a commissioner, but as far as I know I've seen no other artist require that and I myself don't think it matters much

As an artist who has done a lot of commissions over time, I actually always am curious to see what my commissioners come up with for their titles and descriptions. Even better when they come up with lil stories n stuff. I usually just come up with my own things separately. ^^

If in my case, I'd say that's perfectly fine, I don't tend to see my commission work like the kind of titled works made to be displayed in a public art gallery, so I let my client do whatever with
