if you can find (on, say, the internet archive, hypothetically) the fan-made "Morton-Jankel Cut" that includes deleted scenes recovered from nearly-lost footage that contain important context that actually fixes a bunch of the confusing parts! (plus payoff for a joke setup that never got resolved in the final release.)
Thank you for this. I just watched the movie tonight with a handful of friends and it was wildly entertaining. It's actually so charming and now lives forever in my head, rent free.
