My main advice for people who are perhaps younger than 25 years old and don't remember how games as an industry and players used to refer to themselves is the sooner you excise the term "gaming community" from your vocabulary, the sooner you will have a healthier relationship with the medium and feel free when you realize gross terms of that ilk are about as far from grassroots as they get. If you see anyone in a position of significant influence using that term unironically, perhaps consider the master they really serve and whether they're really, truly speaking your language and in your personal interest.
