Retired Navy Capt. Don Walsh, who was part of the first crew to reach the deepest part of the ocean in 1960, has passed away at the age of 92. Alongside Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard, Walsh descended to the Mariana Trench's Challenger Deep, 7 miles below the surface. They spent 20 minutes on the seafloor and confirmed the presence of marine life. Walsh, a Navy officer, and oceanographer, had a distinguished career and later became a professor and marine consultant. He was known for his adventurous spirit and instilled a curiosity about the world in his children.
