Republican Rep. George Santos of New York is refusing to resign and warns that his expulsion from Congress would set a dangerous precedent. Santos, who is facing federal charges and a scathing ethics investigation, could become the sixth member of Congress to be expelled. The House is expected to vote on his expulsion on Friday. Santos argues that he is being treated unfairly and claims that mere allegations should not be enough to remove elected officials from office. The House Ethics Committee has found overwhelming evidence of lawbreaking by Santos and has sent the case to the Justice Department. Santos also faces a 23-count federal indictment for identity theft and misuse of campaign funds. Despite surviving two previous expulsion attempts, the recent Ethics Committee report has convinced more members that Santos should be expelled. Santos held a press conference ahead of the vote, criticizing the report and claiming that he was being persecuted. He also plans to introduce a resolution to expel Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge. Bowman dismissed Santos' actions as a "meaningless stunt."
