after over half a year of the Pascow album being out, "Grüßt Eve" has become a real sleeper hit for me. The song is musically very unsuspecting and the mix makes the vocals hard to understand, but once I started paying attention to it nails the atmosphere so damn well and it's grown to be one of my favourites on the album
It's about facing the immediate aftermath of a catastrophe, hinting at a nuclear explosion
The verses, delivered very flatly, but with a slight tremble, describing primarily the avoidance of going outside, are almost drowned out by tense, driving instrumentals and a noisy mix
Weg von den Wolken, unter die Erde
Kellerhäuser, Schächte, dann für heute hier bleiben
Niemand spricht jetzt noch von morgen
Away from the clouds, underground
Basement flats, shafts, then staying here for today
Now nobody talks of tomorrow
This is contrasted by the chorus, which at the beginning sounds almost hopeful, describing an overwhelming, "almost pretty", bright light. The chorus then ends with a brief downer, reminding you of the reality that is faced
Alles war erleuchtet, beinahe schön
Überall nur Licht, wir konnten es sehen
Und dann wurde es still
Everything was illuminated, almost pretty
Everywhere just light, we could see it
And then it got quiet
The chorus lyrics are always slightly modified, until on the last round it gets explicit about how devastating the situation is
Alles ist am Arsch, und wird es bleiben
Das hier räumt keiner je mehr auf
Und langsam wird es kalt
Everything's fucked, and will stay that way
Nobody will clean this up anymore
And slowly it's getting cold
Ending on "it's getting cold" and just leaving it there just hits so hard every time
