I would like to be using some slightly better speakers than my TV's built-in ones/some like 15 year old computer speakers. I don't give a shit about surround sound, I just want like a wired 2.1 setup. I mostly listen to things through my laptop speakers or cheapo headphones so I am not looking for anything high end

I would be hooking up:

  • a record player that has a built-in pre-amp (fine with using a better amp as part of the setup but it isn't a requirement)
  • a computer
  • I guess maybe my TV so I'd have the better sound if I'm watching a movie on my PS4. Or that PS4 directly?

Things I don't use and would consider antifeatures:

  • bluetooth
  • streaming apps
  • the word 'smart' anywhere on the box

It goes without saying that it will not be allowed into my house if it has:

  • alexa/ok google

So I guess, I assume I need a receiver, some speakers and a subwoofer.

Anyone have either a price range or a specific setup I should be looking at?

Thanks

but also what we did in this situation, because we're handy with a soldering iron, was buy an amplifier chip and project box and built our own little fixed-gain output amp that we plugged into our TV's "headphones out", and got some cheap Bose speakers to wire into the box.

your assumption is correct about a set of things you can buy and be done; last time I bought a speaker system (uhhhhhh 2011?), you could just walk into a best buy and find a cheap solid receiver + speaker system (iirc the only criterion I used was "I've heard denon is good") and be guaranteed that you'd get something far better than built-ins, even if an Audio Guy would be able to walk in and tear your setup to shreds immediately.

however, there's also a lot of integrated 2- and 3-speaker sound bars that are worth the money now, which include the amplifier + input switcher, speakers, and sometimes a discrete subwoofer.

i work at an e-waste recycler as the stereo guy and: you want a cheap 90s stereo receiver and some nice speakers by like. polk or infinity or something. one of the low-to-midrange brands. unless you find a nice deal on some B&Ws or something
