social media was a cool place to keep up with my friends' lives when it only was one website
but thanks to political, useability, and ideological reasons we're now across 90
keeping up with social media now requires seven times as much effort so i just don't.
just kinda sore that this has cost me a substantial number of friendships and one partner
having thought about this for more than two minutes: perhaps that's the point of killing twitter.
I hear that.... My social media is now my phone's contacts and email. Everything else is just too complex, shouty, upsetting, and divisive. Except Cohost, but it's kind of anonymous.
i see it as an attempt to break up leftist organizing. elmo sure does hate him some unions
i dont think i ever experienced a world where it was just the one site. it's always been this way for me.
maybe because i didn't meet people through social media for a very long time and mainly met them thru various games, forums, teamspeaks, ircs, discords, telegram, matrix, etc etc. there was never one unifying platform. like almost none of them were posting on twitter / mastodon. neither was i, until a friend of mine invited me to their server thingy. the only reason im friends with people who post on fedi/cohost now is because i made close friends with some people on mastodon thru a meetup, which biased my social circles heavily more towards people in those places from what it used to be
it may also be generational. But the thing isn't that we weren't scattered, but that Twitter acted as a common carrier between all the islands.
that's such an interesting dynamic honestly. although i kinda suspect its less generational and more just how u happened to traverse the internet. cause i know ppl my age who had experiences more like yours where they were extremely twitter in a way i never was
my social groups were extremely based around minecraft servers and then later my little pony fan chatrooms and i was otherwise really an internet shutin
