for example, I'd love to write margin notes in my code -- but it destroys my code. But having an overlay layer that carries the comments (and interacts with, but does not touch the text would be big.
Imagine if google docs comments were both good and integrated into every IDE + text editor, and also were just lines of text. ideally do this for everything not just code
