what happened to all the designers. is this some school thing. or do gamers want only one thing and that's the ability to self-express while still concealed-carrying two rifles in obviously Tactical Gear
This is one thing I’ve been noticing about the general aesthetic of science fiction in general as of late; there’s quite a push towards sameness, where one grizzled Space War vet in matte plate armor and a square rifle is indistinguishable from the next. It’s like all these creative people collectively decided that the future is going to look like an off brand gaming PC and everyone fell in line. What happened to the retro future of colorful spandex suits and goofy looking accessories? What about the boxy, office-like minimalism of Star Trek? Why do we all see the future as metallic and drab?
Original things are expensive to make and require a bunch of QA work to make sure your cool shoulderpads aren't clipping into your head when you do the latest dance emote you just bought for 1200 Bright Dust.
Just to be clear on this, I absolutely want:
- Cool shoulderpads and goofy armor skirts and hats that look like you mugged a Touhou character
- The cool shoulderpads to constantly clip into your character, your back-holstered weapon, the environment, etc
- Characters that if you have them kitted out right look like a mess of vertices and culled surfaces when you do the latest dance emote
the other day I was looking at what Mercurysteam was up to, other than Metroid: Dread (since I really enjoyed aspects of their Castlevania reboot), and I discovered that they had also made The Horniest Freemium Shooter Ever, aka Spacelords. at first I thought it was just going have the usual bunch of Quiet-esque poorly-dressed gun girls combined with generic space marines, but it turns out that the entire cast is dressed like that, male or female, which i can appreciate. male nipples and bulging crotches to go with the bikini tops
it reminds me of certain old SF eurocomics, and since Mercurysteam is based out of Spain that makes a certain amount of sense. like the character designers and art directors just decided to say “fuck it, we are going Full Horny with this” and since they published it themselves there was nobody else to say “no”
anyway the reason i’m mentioning this, is that a side effect of the Full Horny is that the designs are significantly more interesting than the generic space marine bullshit everybody else is doing lately. is the game itself any good? i have absolutely no fucking idea, i am terrible at modern multiplayer shooters, but kudos to Mercurysteam for pushing the boundaries a bit
can't be nudity if they don't have genitals
