this reminds me of the d&d item "the ring of the grammarian", which lets a player change one letter in a spell name to create a new spell. such as cause fear -> cause bear
in earlier dnd versions druids had a spell where they could just throw a fistfull of bees at someone and i think about this alot
in dnd 4 thanks to poor writing in a rulebook bear transformed druids could, with a bit of reading Reddit, pin someone in a way that made them unable to attack, and every time they moved out of the space you'd attack them with an attack of opportunity that was irresistable and pulled them back into the frontal pin
there's an interactive fiction game called Counterfeit Monkey where all the tools you pick up do things like that
