everything gets obsoleted in 5 years in terms of security upgrades. but they know that. that's why they're riding those dell optoplexes from 2008 still. because it's a game of chicken. because by the time you buy equipment you'll already regret it, and it's not even that much more functional.

local presses were using linotypes into the 1970s. because things just worked.

computer security and the arms race is a big part of why technology is required to move so fast, but maybe that's a thing computer security as a field needs to reflect on when thinking about priorities.
