in 2021 i set myself a rule which was: i will allow myself to take off my mask in indoor spaces if and only if the statewide daily case rate didn't exceed triple digits for 4 consecutive weeks (iirc there were like 3.5 weeks with sub-100 case rates and then delta hit and fucked it all up)
and i'm very glad i drew that line in the sand because it set a point of reference for everything that happened since then, it helps me compare the current state of things against what was to me the most optimistic period of time in the middle of the pandemic. obv the risks have changed and the vaccine changes the calculus but we very much are still having a 9/11's worth of covid deaths every 2 or 3 weeks so. not sure how much has changed
