we go nowhere else.
e: forgot to mention that we reuse masks; its my understanding that the main thing that compromises the filter material is moisture, and that if it doesnt become sodden, it is possible to leave it to dry for reuse. i do not recall if anyone doing actual science has examined the safety of this. since our visits to places are generally less than an hour and the mask is intended to be effective over a work shift that involves potentially a lot of sweat and hot breath and the most we do is push grocery carts around, i feel pretty vOv about it
we have a hepa 13 air filter running in our room constantly, and in our previous residence we had the 4 filter box fan (instructions: https://cleanaircrew.org/boxfanfilterfaq)
we were this isolated before the pandemic. we were already shut ins barely connected to society. now going out is devastatingly difficult because instead of just making me feel like i am dying, it might actually kill me. or kill my partner. or kill one of us through the other.
masking is all i can fucking do, living in the season of death without sword or banner
I'm a massage therapist in my day job and since about November 2021 all of our treatment rooms have had HEPA-filtered air circulators installed. While at work I'll wear a Canuxi FFP2 Filtering Half Mask - my choice largely being dictated by the fact that they're VERY affordable ($23 CAD for a box of 50 at T&T when they have them in stock) and I get a pretty decent fit out of them. In terms of disposables I've also had good results with the Dent-X Canada FN-N95 510.
On my commute or when I'm going into any sort of indoor space I'll wear my Prescientx Breathe reusable mask (unfortunately they only deliver to Canada). As far as elastomeric masks go it's pretty good - you get a good seal even with the earloop straps and it's VERY easy to breathe and speak while wearing it (which is not something I could say when I was using a 3M half-mask respirator). The filters are also extremely affordable and will last you a long time. If you're looking at getting one I'd strongly recommend getting the original-model Breathe over the more recent Breathe 2, as the Breathe 2 is a little front-heavy and can cause the somewhat-flimsy straps to stretch, meaning you risk breaking your seal.
In terms of habits, I'm still not going out to eat at restaurants or going to movies or shows or basically anywhere besides work and stores when I need to buy things. The one exception I'm making is VanCAF later this month, which I'll be wearing my elastomeric mask to & limiting myself to an hour of shopping time. I have a few friends I see in person regularly but apart from that most everything is online. It's hard! I miss going to my favorite greasy-spoon diner and getting a plate of blueberry pancakes and sausages and reading a book, or going to a dumb movie and getting a big bag of buttery popcorn. However, very early on in the pandemic I came to the realization that there was no restaurant meal or movie-going experience that would be worth the way I'd feel if I, a loved one, or a patient got sick and I wasn't sure that I'd done everything in my power to keep myself safe. Also, y'know, as a self-employed RMT, an acute COVID infection represents thousands of dollars out of my pocket at a MINIMUM, and potentially even a hard end to my career if I were to be stricken with some more-disabling form of Long COVID. So. Y'know.
I use a https://www.amazon.com/GVS-SPR644-Elastomeric-Professionals-Replaceable/dp/B095YBV2T9 because it also has source control.
I wear (n95 or greater depending) paper masks in places I think I'll need to be heard, like doctors offices', but for trains planes grocery shopping etc I wear that. For long duration trains, I have a Microclimate Air2 (The Bourgeois Bubble) space helmet type thing I got for half off on black friday because I needed to travel cross country and wanted something that also protected my face on a 14 hour train ride.
I didn't have many habits before that were different, I've had this fatigue-and-pain-and-cognitive-issues illness for decades, I didn't have that much of a life going into this that wasn't already mostly remote. I mask everywhere and if I have to go indoors for food, I just get takeout and find a place to eat it.
I can't afford to get more sick. this is the closest to employable I've ever been.
