they could still be separate if there was a system of attestation/revocation of user identities associated with the group, forming a second layer of identity-based federation that is not married to the hosting
oh yeah. I've thought about that but for bigger picture, but maybe it can be applied to mastodon-axis stuff earlier
a determined ignorance of these possibilities seems to be baked into the development philosophy and direction of mastodon itself, but it's certainly possible in theory
it's kind of why i'm down on the current fedi instantiation long-term, they seem very intentional about not planning for this kind of eventuality
I don't hold hope for mastodon, but I mean the format.
mastodon and it's offspring are too tied up in Eugen, for and against
the corporate toe-dipping into activitypub stuff probably doomed that whole attempt (ragged construction paper star "there was an attempt" sense)
you'd be surprised how much load a toothpick-reinforced-chewing-gum composite crossmember can hold.
this would all be so much simpler if we could simply exchange encrypted blobs of opaque data with each other in a harmonic song of pure energy instead of having to make "features" available to "users"
