I was kind of surprised when I set up an ssh tarpit and opened port 22 to it on a residential IP. it seems like I get ballpark of 6,000 unique IPs trying it per day

I guess just crawling every registered domain or every IP is low-effort enough that some non-trivial number of people are doing it for hope of a return

I figure a good chunk of them are crawlers that were someone's project that got abandoned but they use the box for other things and forgot about it

but yeah the other half are botnets or botnet seekers, no doubt
