I was specifically taught to do them on my fists while learning martial arts because not fucking up your wrist is a really important part of punching thing hard.
I'm another person who does push-ups on their fists due to this.
I can also recommend the “Perfect Push-up” as something that makes them even easier to do with minimal pain. (Cf the old observation that a lot of those “as seen on TV” products are stealth accessibility aids.)
