the 'mechWarrior series seems to make people think Battlemechs have a throttle, but their engine measures rather low top speeds if that were the case.

Unless, as you learn when you read the books, it's much more about instantaneous torque. The books describe the best 'mech pilots almost dancing with their feet, but they can also reverse fairly rapidly after inertia calms down. So brake/accelerator doesn't make much sense, neither does an accelerator pedal for each leg.

which implies:

in abstract, a Battletech Battlemech is an armed e-fixie.

in reply to @NireBryce's post:

I've wanted an electric tandem with a pedal assist mid-drive on the rear cranks and the front chain just completely detached, so I can run a pintle mount on the front seatpost that carries a 12.7mm machine gun with a belt feed trailing into panniers. steering linkage to the front wheel like a cargo bike ofc.

can also probably fit an entire left-facing anti-submarine hedgehog battery in a Bakfiets, but that trades humor and deterrence with surprise and overwhelming firepower.
