the correct way to deal with any engagement is, yes, to break contact instead of directly engaging, gain space, reposition, and re-engage from another angle. This is basic like, sun tzu stuff. Running away solves nothing. Running away and re-orienting to gain an advantage over your problem? time-tested. Well, okay, maybe less applicable when you don't have an entire squad.
