haha wait. can you use an anamorphic lens to have, essentially, a real world stretch-res (4:3 stretched widescreen, so targets are stretched horizontally in fps games) gunsight? I wonder if any gamer-photographer has done that for airsoft or paintball

in reply to @NireBryce's post:

that is a really neat idea!

i think there might some issues with using an off-the-shelf lens (either camera or projector) mainly because they are intended to focus from the front of the element to a distance, and you would need to flip it backwards to desqueeze the image so maybe you would need some kind of nearsighted diopter to make it work? or maybe a full second lens setup? optics are hard!

easier solution would be to use a regular lens with a camera or monitor that can desqueeze in software

so maybe a gopro with the media mod, plus a used smallhd 502 or similar

that would give you a robust, light, compact, inexpensive-ish solution compared to building a desqueezing sight using optics

hmm maybe i misread the original post, since it says "stretched horizontally"

if you want taller narrower targets, then yes a standard anamorphic lens should work for that

a Sirui 75mm would probably be a good starting point there
