im sensing a thief alignment chart in the works. aside from the thief games, is hitman a thief game? untitled goose game?
UGG is thief-like -- certainly an immersive sim around thievery and traps, but has simplistic guard-dodging mechanics and a simplistic stealth system. If anything, I would say it's an evolution in the "Evade the Hyrule Castle Guards"-like genre.
Hitman is a Thief game in the same way Half-Life is a Quake game -- similar fundamental mechanics, but a very different flow through maps and philosophy of objective, causing there to be psychological if not mechanical differences to how problems are approached.
But that said, I believe Sniper Elite V2 and the succeeding Sniper Elite games, when played for "no detection, only required casualties" are more Thief than Hitman is.
"Is Todd Howard's Todd Howard's: Oblivion (by Todd Howard) a Thief?" is a question I still have no answer for, to this day.
All of this being said, I still do not think there is a good Thief game. There's shimmers of it in all of these, but even Thief is, I would say, lacking at being a Thief in essence. Which makes sense due to the sociotechonomic limitations of the time.
"Is Deus-Ex a Thief?" is a question I've been pondering for longer, and I think I've settled on "Yes, played correctly, but not a good one", even if it is a good game for what it is.
Deus-Ex: Human Revolution, in a ghost (no detection, no one hears you, no one sees the body) no-unrequired-kills run, is a Thief, and as it's a specialized run, runs less risk of the pitfalls of Hitman. But it's a thief-lite.
