the gameplay is just completely detached from the realities of the world.

  • "hurry! Everyone is dying! you better get there! Or The World Burns Forever"
  • sure but if I don't camp after every fight my wizard will be so tired I might as well replace him with a rogue. And my fighter will be so tired I might as well replace her with a barbarian. and i might as well respec off bard.
    • this is better at later levels, which is, honestly, the opposite of how it should work
  • tee hee lets have sex while the world burns. but like, not in the fun way. And 'by the world burns' I mean it's literally on fire, being destroyed, you could stop it in sixty rounds or less
  • after camping four times to clear the top floor, partially because my wizard had to cast See Invisible or Create Water or something to navigate the world, we finally go downstairs, four days later, to where we previously heard they were executing prisoners right now. Apparently they take a long time to kill even the first one, so my intervention probably wasn't that needed and I could have come back after finishing the more convenient quests.
  • out of combat healing basically doesn't exist unless you cheese Nice Berry by having 3 druid hirelings. This is probably the biggest issue of all of them.

Strict adherence to D&D canonicity with abilities and actions is a mistake

  • my choices are make an attack or cast a spell, and then with the bonus action maybe make an offhand attack or cast like, Safe Fall or something as a bonus action
  • ALL the movement techs should be bonus actions so you can leap and attack at the same time, idk how overpowered that seems you can always tweak it
  • bonus actions should have a lot of spells shifted to them, including pretty much all attack cantrips once you have more than 1 level 2 spell slot. Is that overpowered? Yes. But it gives me something to do if I have no dual wielded weapons. Casters especially are so hurting for this.
  • At least make scrolls be bonus actions -- they cost too much to be major actions.
  • make items way less punishing to use. Either give more ways to craft, or make them cheaper, or at least more abundant
  • literally sorcerer should be the NWN2 sorcerer where they get limited spell selection but can cast everything as a cantrip. Yes, you heard me.
  • basically, half the time I can't use any bonus action but Shove. Is Shove good gameplay? sure, but not on a fucking Wizard.

in reply to @NireBryce's post:

make it 4e! let me bear form and take the feats that make it so that if they move at all once I pin them, there's a 100% chance I grab them as an attack of opportunity, move them back into the pin, and then take another attack of opportunity, and then during my turn displace them, causing them to get attack-of-opportunitied and pulled back into the pin, causing another attack of opportunity, repeat until the DM decides you can't be a druid anymore thanks to some drow poison or something

I hate that the perfect CRPG was NWN2 and we all just missed it because of how bad the camera and rubberbanding was and also the story. That magical time where 3.5 was old but 4 wasn't out yet.

NWN2 went with the spirit not the law.

tired: you can rest all you want and there are no consequences of the passing of time Except For When There Are Sometimes

wired: resting was too easy so now if you rest the Spirit Eater will consume your soul unless you go and commune with the spirits once a day

if there was any way to recover hp outside of combat that wasn't Two Short Rests and a Long I'd be all for it, but right now I am making the game bearable by having 3 druid hirelings, all who know niceberry, to fill each of my partymembers with like 48 1d4 healing berries (5 l1, 3 l2, 2 l3, plus 3 l1 thanks to the druid recovery points)

but its such a mismatch for the pace of the campeign, which wants to be like a "you start at level 9" campaign.

maybe that's all it is, really -- the campaign starts you too low for what you're required to be doing.
