maybe that was the easiest way to avoid having problems because they named it to sound like java?
i think because sun paid netscape to call it that as a weird way to promote java applets in browsers, and have the syntax be C-like instead of lispy, but that last part may be wishful thinking (that there's a world where scheme became popular)
