the thing about raspberry pis isn't that they're good for the price, or that there aren't more powerful boards. it's that the raspi company makes a board for 10+ years and then you can find plenty on eBay, so it's kinda a stable hardware target

like all stable hardware targets, it's poorly documented and has a lot of deep magic

Right? There's very little reason to buy a raspberry pi if you don't have a hardware project in mind – second hand business thin clients are far more powerful for the same money if you just want a small computer in your house

Also a well-defined answer to “what OS/software do I run on it” (their own Debian variant, or these days you can run vanilla Debian or Ubuntu on a Pi 4).

The answer to that question was… less obvious on the competitors' websites that I looked at, last time I checked (earlier this year).
