it's been a while since I watched it but iirc they shall not grow old had a dvd bonus feature about the process of restoring the old footage they used and it was seriously like
- original scan, from badly exposed and scratchy/damaged film that had probably been forgotten and unmaintained for 100 years
- corrected exposure
- fixed scratches/damage
- warp arms and legs around at 60fps because more frames means more better
like they did a lot of work to get it looking good enough to make it look that bad and they could have just skipped the last step
