in the cities I've been in, most one bedrooms aren't single-occupant, they're just what you can afford
When I was looking for housing a few years ago for two people I was looking for 2 bedrooms and most units listed as 2 bedrooms were actually 1 bedrooms where they slapped a door and a “closet” onto the living room so it could be a “bedroom” but if used as such you just had a small kitchen and no common area.
And they were quite expensive and high demand anyway.
Alsooooo housing costs are a reproductive justice issue. If every larger unit is just More Adult Roommates then they get priced expecting a Four Income Adult Household which then makes them way too expensive for anybody who wants to raise children and so they conclude they can’t afford to have children and don’t. If they end up with kids anyway then it guarantees they will be living in poverty
