I do like spriting things; I think I could be pretty happy spriting a billion little critters for a game, and locations too

it's nice to be able to put on video essays in the background while I work on this stuff since it doesn't take the same parts of my active thinking processes to do this

I'm going to have to work on music for the game too but I'll save that for when I've gotten some more overworld and critter sprites done

@glitchedpuppet

on this note does anyone have any YT video essays they like?
i've been finally making my way through hbomberguy (I basically never watched his stuff before the other day) and i like that, i like shaun videos, and folding ideas guy, so anything in that vein (or even things you're interested in and why, just let me know) would be nice

A History of Urban Poop - Sean Munger
Sean has a lot of good ones, the watergate one and the iran-contra one especially. His JFK Assassination Conspiracy Debunking one is long and has a lot of "and the president was shot" but if you can stomach it it's pretty interesting, as it's more about the conspiracy theorists vs research than the assassination, and a subthread through the whole thing about how misinformation flowed before the internet.

The World's First Microprocessor: F-14 Central Air Data Computer - Alexander the ok About the first microprocessor, recently declassified. Alexander the ok also has a few other good ones, especially around the titanic submersable implosion last year.

in reply to @glitchedpuppet's post:

i really like jenny nicholson's 4 hour documentary about evermore and i don't care at all about theme parks. if you haven't seen all of jon bois' work it's worth looking at

Three arrows is good, he has a lot of vids typically on political stuff though (I've linked his vids before), and We're In Hell (the guy who made the utopianism vid) has some interesting videos, Jacob Geller has cool vids like that one on video game writing (I also liked his vid on who's afraid of modern art)

Obvious recs after hbomberguy and folding ideas are PhilsophyTube and Errant Signal. For beautiful math, 3Blue1Brown. For games, People Make Games. For urbanism, Not Just Bikes, Climate Town, and City Beautiful.

for video game video essays, Transparency is a smaller channel but i’ve quite enjoyed what i’ve watched there. they focus on themes more than gameplay. i’m partial to their one on DKC3; i found the channel through someone on cohost showing this one to me.

other things that come to mind: Tom 7 of course for tech madness (though less essay‐y and more experiment‐y), Patricia Taxxon for furry madness (entertaining and thought‐provoking if sometimes hard to follow or agree with), and Afterthoughts for uh, it’s a small mixed bag but what’s there is good stuff mostly about UX in games and social issues in games/film.

Putting my hat in the ring for FoldingIdeas. Recommend starting with "Line Goes Up - The Problem with NFTs" if that's what you're in the mood for, and "A Lukewarm Defence of Fifty Shades of Grey (The Movie)" otherwise.

Tom Nicholas is my new favorite, absolutely adore his stuff so far. He has a professionalism of delivery that feels honestly refreshing.
Stewart Hicks does some fascinating essays on both the practical and the political side of architecture, and I have learned whole new ways to think about how we build cities and structures and how those reflect the society that built them.
Noah Caldwell-Gervais is an absolutely stellar writer, possibly one of the best of my generation, and every video that drops makes me reschedule my whole day. His travel videos on the real history and landscapes of the Fallout series are some of the best damn travel writing I've ever read.

Since nobody else has mentioned it I’ll throw in a recommend for BobbyBroccoli. Well-written, well-produced, documentary-type videos about topics orbiting the general science/tech space, but almost certainly not what you immediately think of from that poor description. Historical storytelling within living memory, not current events.

(Edit: someone else mentioned Jon Bois; BobbyBroccoli is transparently copying Jon’s style, to the point that his video about his production process is called ā€œHow to animate like Jon Boisā€)

I like Hazel's stuff a lot. She tends to talk about anime and old rpgs, searches for weird lost media, and just games from her childhood that she liked for one reason or another. I appreciate the way she tends to speak from her personal stories with media. I think in particular I like "sonic adventure is beautiful" as like... a recommendation to start with partly because it's short but is so very much her style so it's a good way to see whether you vibe with her narrative voice or not.

Sulmatul ( https://www.youtube.com/@SulMatul) just did a 6 hour analysis of Revolutionary Girl Utena, episode by episode. And she has at least three? videos on Pathologic if you need more of that in your life after HBombs 2hr+ video on the matter.
Action Button Reviews is extremely long, meandering, joke and anecdote filled video game introspectives by Tim Rogers. I only ever tend to recommend the Tokimeki Memorial One ( https://youtube.com/watch?v=xb-DtICmPTY ), but they all have dry-wit charm.
James Hoffman ( https://youtube.com/@jameshoffmann ) is the extremely chill voiced Coffee Guy of youtube. Great morning vibes, lots of weird experiments and showcases, and is absolutely willing to accidentally torture himself taste testing with incredibly old or very poorly chose coffee substances.

Honeybat, Jacob Geller, Errant Signal, Transparency, SphereHunter, Thorhighheels, among more i could name and wont for overload, are very good video game primary essayists who do extremely good work at connecting to wider ideas and media history.

Chill Goblin ( https://youtube.com/@ChillGoblin ) and Unlearning Economics ( https://youtube.com/@unlearningeconomics9021 ) might interest you, as they exist along similar lines to Shaun the dear skull mans works.

Hazel (anime deepdives and cultural anecdotes, with great editing gags) , Ladyknightthebrave (primarily movie and show analysis, with a focus on positives and enjoyed experiences), CJ The X (unhinged bisexual goblin energy cultural analysis through media), JosƩ Bird (media analysis), Skip Intro (his copaganda series is fire), and Alexander Avila (incredible queer proffessor vibes) are all extremely good media and cultural essayists.
