My enjoyment of multiplayer games over the years has had an inverse relationship with the proliferation of voice chat.
hot take but the only upside to voice chat in games is that your hands are already busy, although that might be the voice dysphoria and bad hearing talking
even ignoring the bold bigotry going on in them, most gamers don't know how to handle mic volume and gain so they're like listening to a Scrub Jay that has built a nest in your headphone earcup
So, I've only just recently gotten into VRChat recently (as in, in the last 2-3 months) and this post confused me, because I very clearly remember seeing a text chat feature in the game, but apparently it was only added relatively recently, in late 2022. Of course, it could be too little too late, and that'd be perfectly fair.
have voice dysphoria? try: learning an entire new language (and making most of your friends do so)
Yeah, it's definitely more efficient in action games. I don't mind it with people I already know but even then it uses way more of my energy than just text.
