nearly every time we talk about how DOCSIS modems, up until relatively recently, encapsulated PPPoE traffic in MPEG Transport Stream format, we have the pleasure of seeing someone go “wait, what?”
what, and I can not stress this enough, the fuck

"periodic maintenance" rhymes way too much with lte timing advance and power control (but not frequency; the lte mobile shall tx as if the rx frequency it sees were correct, so the base station sees doppler shift for both directions). do cable modems have so much mobility that they have to redo timing advance and precompensate for doppler?! (?!) some writeups of the corresponding lte parts: http://sharetechnote.com/html/Handbook_LTE_TimingAdvance.html http://sharetechnote.com/html/PowerControl_LTE.html
i think docsis 3 ended up being just like "fuck it, everything's gone ethernet", but, yeah, for docsis 1 and 2, your cable internet was just another TV channel to the guts of the cable company.
this concept was so anathema to my brain it took 6 times to understand what it was saying. now i understand eldritch horrors causing loss of sanity
DOCSIS is fucking hilarious. I got to learn a bit about that at spectrum, and we did some really cool and hacky shit lol
FOR A MOMENT I was like WHY, but then I remember that I only really learned what DOCSIS was around the time that 3.0 was being talked about, so the channels thing is now incredibly funny to think about
yeah that... that makes a lot of sense. sadly. because, unfortunately, cable companies
there are so many things that come down to "because, unfortunately, cable companies," aren't there
