I know self sharing spams the tl (sorry! FWIW there is an option in settings to auto-fold many reply posts).
but the big use for it, is as a way to add information to a post you think will get shared a lot, that won't follow those shares.
so you put the core thrust in one post and then your thoughts about it in the following one

no, sometimes I put up an argument and then strafe it with a GAU-8, but that's where i know the first one won't be shared :p
